If you’re looking to up your homemaking skills then these homemaking tips are for you. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed and demotivated when you don’t know where to start.
Today, I am sharing some of my go to tips and tricks that keep me motivated.
This post is all about homemaking tips.
Over the years, I’ve developed a routine and rhythm of my own when it comes to household tasks. Depending on the time available, I either tackle them by room or by category.
For today’s post, I am sharing the category method I use when I need to manage tasks in chunks. These are:
1. Linen:
- Ideally speaking, bed linen should be changed every week. Assign one day of the week for this task. Add the old linen to the washer as soon as you finish changing the linens.
- When changing linen, make sure to close the zippers or openings. This prevents smaller clothes from getting trapped inside during the wash.

- On sunny days, it’s a good idea to sun your duvets and pillows. This helps rid them of any odours.
- Monthly chores like changing the couch and furniture linens are just as important. It also gives one the opportunity to change decor for the season.
2. Checklists and declutter:
- Keep a spring checklist handy. This also allows you to check off the daily, weekly and monthly cleaning tasks.

- Clearing up clutter can make a huge difference in how bad we perceive the mess to be. Children’s toys have a way of multiplying. Clearing them is half the battle won.
3. Kitchen:
- Make a habit of cleaning the kitchen sink daily. For daily cleaning, I use vinegar and baking soda. Once a week, I will use something stronger.
- Cleaning the kitchen counters, stove and sink everyday is not only hygienic, but also creates a sense of calm and order in the house.

- Maintaining heating appliances is important. For example, my stove has an exhaust. I make sure to keep the dust away.
- A clean and organised space, no matter the size leads to a clean and organised mind.
- Setting timers for tasks is also a good way of ensuring that the house is maintained despite limited time.
- Dusting in the warmer weather is just as important as in the wintertime.

4. Paper clutter:
In Germany, we receive most correspondence by post.
Having a mail sorting system is extremely helpful. You can solve paper clutter by creating a command centre for everyone’s mail.
5. Electronics:
- Use gummy bands to keep cords from getting entangled. This is easier on the wallet than buying organisers for everything. You can store these cables in a smaller box in the shelf to prevent them from moving about.
- You can also use travel cases to store hard drives and usb drives. Having a designated space for all the small bits helps.

6. Laundry:
- I try my best to stay on top of laundry. However, it is one chore that often escapes me. With children in the house, I do laundry three times a week.
- As the children grow, keeping up to date on their clothing is important. I pack away our summer clothes. Spring is the time, I will go through our clothing needs.
- Set aside some space for clothes that need to be donated or recycled. For example, the top drawer in both my kid’s cabinet is designated for clothes that are too small and need to be donated.

7. Meal planning:
Meal planning is the activity that takes the most time and planning.
- Double the portion of whatever you’re cooking for the next day so that you don’t have to cook everyday.
- If you clean as you go, there’s not much to do after the cooking is finished.
- Write down your top favourite meals for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner and then rotate them monthly.
Bonus Tips for General Declutter:
- Regular cleaning and decluttering is the only way to stay on top of things. Making a habit of picking up whichever part of the house you are in also helps to control clutter.

- Apart from your regular daily chores, choose one main chore to tackle everyday. For example, Mondays for Laundry, Tuesdays for Bathrooms etc.
- Keep your kitchen and Pantry stocked with staples. Refill often used ingredients regularly.
- It all starts with a plan. Write down what you would like to accomplish for the week.
