Finding functional yet aesthetic ways to display your China can be challenging, but these 11 tips to china cabinet organization will solve that easily!

If you love hosting as much as I do, then you’ll probably have a few good pieces of China. And if you’re particularly limited for space, then this is the perfect blog post for you.

This post is all about 11 ways to china cabinet organization.

When we moved into the house we currently live in, space was a luxury. There was just about enough room for a couch and a couple of end tables. We had one wall free, where we decided to place our crockery cabinet. We repurposed an old Ikea Billy bookshelf and added glass doors to give it a more elegant look. This became our China Cabinet.

Here are 11 ways to china cabinet organization

1. Organize by Type:

Identify similar items and stack them together. For example, dinner plates together, side plates together, bowls together, mugs and cups together, Serving dishes separately etc.

2. Organize by Use:

Depending on how to run your home, cook and meal prep, organize everyday dishes on the most accessible shelves and Special-occasion crockery on higher or less convenient shelves. This keeps the most used items at eye level.

3. Organize by set or collection:

If you’d like to use your China as a decorative element, then organising the cabinet by collection is a good way to go. Keeping matching dinnerware sets together, makes table setting easier.

4. Organize by size:

If like me you have a cabinet shelf with shelving placed at differing heights, then organising your china by size makes the most sense. I use the shelves with the most height gap for large serving platters and casseroles. The least height gap houses small dipping bowls or tea cups.

Stack plates from largest to smallest, nest bowls by size, arrange serving platters vertically by dimensions.

5. Organize by colour:

Some people like arranging their books by colour, giving an almost rainbow themed effect. You could do the same with your china. Group white dishes, coloured dishes, and patterned pieces separately for a visually appealing cabinet.

6. Organize by meal purpose:

Another way to organize your crockery is by meals. You could group items such as Breakfast mugs, cereal bowls together, Lunch items like sandwich plates together and Dinner items such as large plates, serving bowls e.t.c together.

7. Organize by family member or User:

If you have young children, then organising a shelf only for them makes sense. When my kids were toddlers, the lowest shelf housed their plastic juice cups, plates and bowls. This was at their height and they loved the feeling of independence it gave them. This is also great if little ones like helping lay the table, they can easily access their cutlery and without fear of accidents happening.

8. Using vertical storage options:

You can also go vertical to save more space, when organizing your china. Store plates upright in plate racks instead of stacking them. You can use dividers for trays, platters, and cutting boards too.

9. Organize by entertaining needs:

If you host often enough, you’ll probably develop a flow or routine to your entertaining. There will always be some serving platters you use more than others, or a sentimental collection you like showcasing. In this case, it helps to keep serving platters, gravy boats, and party dishes together in a dedicated entertaining zone.

10. Organize by material:

If you like to keep like items together, then arranging them by material makes sense. For example, separate porcelain, stoneware, glass, melamine, and fine china to reduce damage and simplify care.

11. Organize by Action zone:

This means that you store the items that go with a particular action. For example, store dishes near the dishwasher for easy unloading. Or place mugs near the coffee station. Keep serving ware near the dining area and so on.
