6 ways to save money this Summer with an at-home summer holiday

Spread the love

Enjoying your summer holidays while saving money is possible! These 6 ways to save money this Summer with an at-home summer holiday will make summer at home a lovely family memory.

at-home summer holiday

This post is all about 6 ways to save money this Summer with an at-home summer holiday.

Although missing out on a summer holiday may sting a bit at first, there are so many ways to take advantage of having an at-home holiday. So here are some ways to make this holiday fun for you and your family. Scroll down below for some bonus ideas!

1. Picnics:

Picnics never get old. Plan a picnic under a nice, shaded tree. Have your kids help you prepare the meals for the picnic whether it be multicoloured cheese sandwiches, fruits, nuts, and cupcakes. Children love to help bake and package meals for a day of fun outdoors.

2. Outdoor Themed Photoshoots:

The best time for pictures is when you have great natural lighting. Get some balls and bubbles in the shoot and even a sprinkler to capture the pure joy of summer bliss to have as a memory for years to come. Or head out to a lake to get some more natural shots.

3. Bon fires:

Get a projector and your laptop set up outdoors to watch a movie while you roast corn, marshmallows, and sausages in the fire. Use an old white and ironed bedsheet if you don’t have a screen. Add fairy lights and plenty of pillows for a cosy feel.

4. At home water park:

Have a slide and outdoor pool set up to watch and join your kids splash and dash. A small kiddie pool to splash about in works well for smaller kids. Throw in some ball pit balls and you have hours of fun in the sun!

5. Mud Painting:

Parents don’t like the extra work of cleaning a dirty toddler. However, sometimes it is absolutely okay for you to get down and dirty with your toddler and show of your best mud painting skills.

You could also set up a ‘mud’ kitchen outdoors. My younger kid still loves to play pretend kitchen with small pebbles, mud and grass. Set aside some toys from the play kitchen and use an old table as the kitchen counter. A small watering can serves as the ‘tap’ for the play kitchen.

6. Start a herb garden:

Gardening can be such a therapeutic summer holiday idea during the lockdown. Get your shovels, buckets, hats, gloves and labels ready with the help of your kids. Your kids would be happy to help. Children naturally gravitate towards nature. Teaching them how to grow their own food or flowers will inspire them to learn more.

Bonus ideas that work for my family:

  • Scrapbooking and Journaling: My girls love unleashing their creativity through colourful journaling. We use travel tabs, boarding cards from previous flights and photos to create a keepsake.
  • Cross stitch kits: My older one is currently exploring the world of cross stitching. This is great for spending long summer days crafting.
  • Creating small nooks for play: I created a Fairy Garden using decor that I already had from spring and autumn decor. Pine cones were collected from the local forest as well as bark, twigs and moss. For a more detailed How-to, read this post on how to make a fairy garden.
  • Museums and Exhibitions: Visit your local museums, libraries and exhibitions with your kids.
  • Blanket Fort sleepovers: Create blanket forts with your kids and have a sleepover! Add fairy lights, watch a movie and have a cosy snuggle. These are lovely memories to have and look back on once the kids are older.
  • Playgrounds: If your kids are feeling fidgety then head on over to the local playground so that they can get that energy out. Plus, there is a good chance you might bump into other families in the same situation. This could lead to more playdates at the local park or playground for your kids.
