Being a mother challenges and pushes you far outside your comfort zone which is why your Mental health as a stay at home mom is so important .

The journey of motherhood is unique to everyone, however we can all agree that it’s a mixed bag. You will have positive days, grateful days, and days where you feel incredibly low. Especially, if you’ve just had a baby. Postpartum blues can be quite a struggle.

However, what do you do if it remains after the initial two weeks have gone by? Postpartum might become a reality but it’s by no means a permanent section of your motherhood story – at least it doesn’t have to be.

Avoiding the mental health pitfalls that are a reality of motherhood at some point or another, means staying alert and asking for help.

Here are Four quick and easy ways to encourage mental health as a stay at home mom.

1. Asking for and accepting Help:

The definition of a happy mom is learning to ask for help and accepting it when offered. Beyond popular belief, you do not have to do everything by yourself. Seek professional help immediately if you feel as if you are anxious, depressed, or will harm yourself or your child. Don’t be discouraged, hormonal changes and just being a mom in general, can be very emotionally and physically overwhelming. Do not try to self-diagnose, heal yourself, or delay believing it will disappear with time.

2. TAKing BREAKS:

Go for a walk outside of the home with your child. Or better yet, give your child to your spouse or a trusted helper and take a moment for yourself by yourself. Use this moment to gather your thoughts, breathe, bathe, take a walk outside in nature, give positive pep-talks, listen to music, eat your favorite meal, exercise, or even just sleep. 

3. Socialising:

You’re still an individual outside of your child/children and setting aside time to facilitate this is crucial. Guilt is a factor, but you can do this guilt-free though it may not be easy initially. It’s an act of self-care. Nurturing your social life means setting dates with your spouse. You could also plan calls via voice or video calls with your friends and family.

4. Eating healthy & balanced meals:

It’s essential that as a stay at home mom you make your health a priority. Your mental health is sustained by eating meals rich in fruits, dark leafy greens, peas, beans, nuts, grains, seeds, and omega-3 &6. This ensures you receive all your vitamins and minerals through food and the use of supplemental vitamins.

Preventive is always better than curative help. Protect yourself from these mental health pitfalls and become a happy stay at home mom.
